Take your time and do your homework before hiring that contractor

Before hiring that contractor

Remember the old trick: count to 10 before you. . . react, make that call, blow up?

When it comes to hiring professionals for home or property, that “trick” can be invaluable. Taking your time, doing your homework and not acting on emotion, impatience or pressure is key to a lasting, satisfying outcome.

Be it roofing, windows, paving or tree work, mindfulness “before you buy” can make the difference between a fairly-priced, quality job and unnecessary expense, stress and regret.

“He was just so nice!” my friend cried as she recounted the “great deal” turned nightmare of a new roof.

It happens a lot. It can start with a caller offering a screaming deal — just when that service is needed. Sometimes it starts with a postcard on the door. Or a visitor saying his company “is in the neighborhood and offering a this-week-only discount.”

The pressure’s on. The work needs to be done. Saving money
is fantastic. And. . .  “they seem
so nice!”

Another oldie to remember: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Do yourself a favor. When there’s work to be done, you be the driver — not someone who happens to show up with a persuasive pitch.

Get at least three bids. Check reviews online. Ask for references. It’s time-consuming and can be uncomfortable for some, but here’s the thing: due diligence up front can save time, money and headache in the end.
