Elements of the Perfect Patio Part 2
by Nathan Wright
Summer is patio time! And there’s nothing better than gathering and relaxing in a space built with intention and an eye for detail that transform a backyard into a sanctuary.
Elements 1-6 appeared June/July issue — available at 50plusmagazine.net. Here we continue with elements 7 through 12.
7 WEATHERING THE ELEMENTS
Consider the weather’s impact on your outdoor experience. An overhead screen or arbor can provide shade, but no protection from rain; full coverage provides both. Both welcome breezes and provide ventilation. Windy areas may call for a wall, screen, fence, or even lowering the patio. A heat source extends not only evening enjoyment but patio season itself.
8 GET COOKING
Everyone loves to grill, but what about cooking/serving entire outdoor meals? The Chateau Wall™ blocks module offers maximum appliances and cabinets for dream-come-true experiences. Dine al fresco with family and friends with food prepared just feet away! People gather where there’s cooking, and counters provide plenty of room to sit and chat. Wood slab, stone or polished concrete countertops create a rugged, beautiful social space and can hide a fridge or cooler. A simple grill surround or elaborate pizza oven are popular options — let your culinary imagination run wild!
9 THE ELEMENT OF PLAY
Everyone loves the outdoors, and you want your patio to be inviting to all ages. Placing it adjacent to play structures or sport courts makes a natural extension for play. Allow space for children to run and maybe incorporate elements such as a chess board for spontaneous games.
10 PLEASANTLY PLANTED
Create a summertime oasis with plants. Choices can be transporting and inspiring, from country garden to tropical paradise, creating a lush, welcoming sanctuary. Dappled tree shade and pops of color from flowers — in planters or in ground — soften and enliven a hardscaped area.
11 NOTHING LIKE AN OPEN FIRE
A fire pit or outdoor fireplace brings the cheerful ambiance of a campfire into your backyard and provides a focal point for activities. Wood, gas-fired, elaborate or simple, there’s no denying that a fire draws people together.
12 PAVED TO LAST
Paving stones are the ultimate in durability. When installed properly, a paving stone patio can provide a lifetime of enjoyment.
