Rules of the Road for Medicare 2026
Find an agent you can trust. As with choosing any professional — be it an attorney, accountant, or physician — the power is in your hands. Check reviews, seek referrals, and thoroughly vet potential agents (review their history, philosophies, and reviews). Don’t hesitate to interview more than one candidate.
Before meeting with an agent. Whether by phone, Zoom, or in person, list the things that are important to you. This might include, if you are comfortable sharing: your lifestyle, medication needs, health concerns (current/future), preferred physicians, or care services, budget limitations. You can even list something as simple as the importance of the agent speaking slowly. Make your list and take it with you to your meeting, as well as pen and paper for making notes.
Relax. Once you’ve decided upon an agent you feel comfortable with and have given them the information you feel is important for them to know, such as health issues you are comfortable sharing and your goals and concerns, let them do their job. Trust that they are educated, experienced, and prepared to help find the best possible coverage options for you. Also, trust that creating a lasting relationship with you is as important to your agent as it is to you.
Help with Costs. There are programs run by the state that can help lower your Medicare costs. Find out if you’re eligible for these programs, how to apply, and other ways to save on your Medicare coverage at medicare.gov.
