Is This the Right Year to Right-Size?
Late December every year, friends and family start making plans for spectacular New Year’s resolutions. Some involve getting back to the gym or losing weight, while others focus on travel or getting organized.
One resolution that can have a huge impact on your happiness, finances, and wellbeing is to right-size your home. Right-sizing isn’t all about upsizing or downsizing. It’s about finding the home that fits who you are and how you live right now.
Perhaps you’re craving a home with less maintenance. Or maybe you feel you have too much space now that the kids have moved out. You might like a home that will allow space for a room for hobbies and/or guests.
Or maybe you’ve always dreamed of having a big garden but haven’t had the room.
Is this the year to right-size?
Upsizing and downsizing tend to focus on square footage. Right-sizing, on the other hand, emphasizes the right fit — choosing a home that matches your current lifestyle rather than the one you had 20 or 30 years ago.
If your home has too many empty rooms, stairs you don’t care for, or features that no longer work for you, it might be a good time to think about a better fit. This could mean moving to a single-level home with less maintenance, a condo near shops and a park, a 55+ community, or even moving to a new area that aligns better with your goals and lifestyle.
Craving simplicity? This might be your year. If you feel like you’d appreciate less cleaning, maintenance, and repairs, and more time to do what you love, it’s time to consider how to reach those goals.
If you want to spend more time and money traveling and volunteering, it may be time to think about a home that gives you more flexibility and fewer responsibilities. If you’re tired of climbing stairs, need space for a hobby, want safer bathroom features and feel you have no use for a big dining room, you’re mentally moving toward the idea of finding a home that works with your life, not against it.
Moving can be daunting and certainly emotional, but right-sizing isn’t about leaving memories behind. It’s about making space for new ones. It can be empowering to choose a home that reflects who you are today.
If you’re interested in rightsizing but aren’t quite sure it’s time, there’s no need to commit right away. Start contemplating a few questions and see where the answers lead you, like:
1 What do I love about my home right now?
2 What spaces do I use? Which ones languish untouched?
3 Are there features that feel like a burden instead of a benefit?
4 Who do I want to live near?
5 What kind of community would make me feel at home?
6 How much yard would I like to have?
7 What amenities would I like to have nearby?
8 What do I like best about my current community?
9 What feature would I especially like to have in my home?
Right-sizing isn’t just about moving. It’s about a whole mindset that focuses on prioritizing wellbeing, simplifying life, and planning proactively.
If you’ve been wondering if this is the year to right-size. . . it just might be!
