Supporting NW Writers, The Birth of New Plays
Theatre 33 at Willamette University is a unique professional arts organization, featuring the most robust play development process in the region – hosting playwrights in residence for 60+ hours of rehearsal culminating in full productions. Participating playwrights come from BC to San Francisco and locales in between.
The public can experience the fruits of this year’s playwrights at Theatre 33’s expanded 12th Regional Summer Festival, July 29 through Aug 10. This year’s 6 offerings range from musical fantasy and comedy to suspense and drama.
Over 11 seasons, 19 of 51 Festival plays have been completed and world premiered in 15 cities nationwide. Admission to the festival is donation-based to ensure access to all.
Participating playwright Nora Douglass says of the program, “My script is the stronger for my experience. The proof is that my script has already been licensed twice for full production in the coming year.”
Executive Director Thomas Nabhan says, “Our goal is to make Willamette University and Theatre 33’s New Play Summer Festival the center of new play development in the west.”
Theatre enthusiasts will want to circle the date and experience one of the most unique offerings in the nation: first viewings of plays that may be destined to become enduring, renowned classics.
