Game Time for the Oregon Senior Games!

PICTURE THIS.

The sun is shining in beautiful Corvallis. The atmosphere hums with the exciting energy of communal gathering, anticipated competition, and the pure pleasure of being part of something wonderful — as a competitor, helper, or part of a cheering section.

If this sounds good, get to Corvallis between August 3 and 19 where 50 or better eager amateur athletes will compete in Olympic-style competitions. The 4th annual Oregon Senior Games will bring together participants from Oregon, across the nation, and around the world.

Beach volleyball is new to the games this year, and cornhole and shuffleboard have returned. Of course, plenty of standing favorites are happening as well, including archery, bowling, traditional and disc golf, pickleball, power walk, race walk, racquetball, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and track and field.

Are you a fun-loving competitor? If so, head to the Corvallis Community Center August 9 and 16 between 5 and 8pm, where the socially inclined will enjoy food, drinks, games and raffles while collecting their registration materials, swag, and T-shirts.

These annual events wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers, who assist in everything from setting up tables and chairs, maintaining water stations, distributing T-shirts, clipboards and snacks; and checking in athletes and recording their results. In appreciation for their invaluable assistance, volunteers are treated to a cornucopia of goodies, including swag, water and snacks, and a commemorative Games T-shirt.

Thinking of bringing Fido or Fluffy? That’s permitted at most outdoor locations as long as they are leashed. Keep in mind it may be hot, so think twice before bringing them.

Morgan Baker, State Coordinator of the Oregon Senior Games, says, “As a member of the National Senior Games Association, the Games are dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for adults through education, fitness, and sport. Our participants encourage one another to do their best whether they are first-time competitors or seasoned athletes. You can really feel the community [spirit] and support at these different events.”

The 2024 Oregon Senior Games are sponsored by Providence Health Plan. Many, many thanks, folks! Learn more at oregonseniorgames.com.
