Community Voices: Puppy Love

I’ve always had and loved dogs, and they love me. Shared playful moments, cuddles, beds and a few fleas. I delight in the memories of our adorable Basset who flunked obedience training, the regal great Dane who cowered at the kitten’s raised paw, and the faithful golden Retriever who brought home a neighbor’s giant boxer shorts (we didn’t return them.)
In this season of life, I’m dogless by choice. While I miss having a dog of my own, I still enjoy them every day. Years of neighborhood walks have transformed me into a sort of dog whisperer. Cats are a hit and miss challenge, but dogs? When they see me coming, they start wigglin’ and waggin’!
Recently I started carrying dog treats, which have received rave rover reviews. And 100% repeat business! I even got one dog to sit, much to his owner’s surprise. “He can sit???” To be polite, I always offer one to the people too, but no takers yet.
I also cherish the human interaction — lots of laughs, new acquaintances and budding friendships. I’m touched by those who feel safe enough to bare their hearts. So many people and those they love are hurting. How precious is the privilege of connecting and caring. Sometimes wrapped in a hug and a promise to hold them in my heart and prayers.
Another blessing born from all this is an ongoing neighborhood support and encouragement group. Most members have dogs!
What I’ve been discovering in this season is two-fold:
1) When we feel something missing in our lives, we can open our hearts to the blessings we do have.
And 2) When we give love and joy, not only does it spread to and through others, it comes back around to warm our own hearts more than we ever imagined. ♥
