There is magic when generations connect. The volunteer based Assistance League® of Salem-Keizer (ALS-K) illustrates this beautifully.
It all began in 1962, when a group of women began meeting in their homes, local restaurants and the historic Daue House, to find ways to help those less fortunate.
Recognizing the importance of new clothing that fit, hygiene and school supplies and food, the women formed Operation School Bell®. “Kids just want to have what other kids have” says ALS-K supporter, Jamie Dobrowolski. “It gives them the confidence to come to school.”
In addition to supporting kids, ALS-K assists homeless families, children aging out of foster homes, homebound adults and preschool-aged children. The nonprofit also offers grants for local teachers to support art, music and cultural education and activities.
These programs are important in myriad ways but boil down to one simple yet vital thing: healthy, supported kids, families and individuals are the root system for a thriving community.
Another wonderful facet of the organization and its efforts is that volunteers become part of something meaningful and find purpose in their efforts. Also, they often enjoy this precious return: thank-you notes with drawings and joyful messages that let them know their efforts are meaningful, appreciated and, indeed, a little magical.
ALS-K programs are made possible through grants, private donations and proceeds from ALS-K owned and operated retail consignment shops Daue House Gift Shop and Encore Furniture. Both offer gift items, household furnishings and accessories with a focus on repurposing and reusing quality goods.
Looking ahead at the next 60 years of helping, ALS-K is always seeking new volunteers. Much goes on behind the scenes, so whatever a volunteer’s background or skillset, there are
always ways to help.
