Tidbits: Pickleball gets its due, Oregon Humane and Willamette Humane Societies merge, Kitten season is coming, more…
Dish or Scoop … Tasty little newsbits
Pickleball gets its due
Pickleball became Washington’s official state sport in March. According to the USA Pickleball Association, the sport was created on Bainbridge Island in 1965 when then Washington State Rep. Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell wanted their families to make use of Pritchard’s badminton court but did not have the equipment. They improvised using ping-pong paddles, a wiffleball and a modified court, and one of the most popular sports with the 50+ set was born.
Oregon Humane and Willamette Humane Societies merge
For decades, Oregon Humane Society (OHS) and Willamette Humane Society (WHS) have provided core services and lifesaving care to companion animals. Collaboration has always been part of that work, and July 1, the organizations will become one — in two locations. The merger is expected to be complete within
24 months.
Animal welfare is evolving. Recent years have brought an increasing need for complex medical care and in-depth behavior rehabilitation. Also on the rise is prioritizing keeping pets in their homes by offering new and innovative support services. Working together, OHS and WHS aim to provide needed care to more animals and their people.
Those engaging or working with either agency won’t see immediate changes. Both will remain open at their respective locations, and as changes do occur, those affected will be notified in advance.
