Speaking of bits, we have bits of chocolate on the brain today seeing as Aug 4 is national chocolate chip cookie day! Is it an official holiday? Who cares! Eat cookies! If you want to make your own today (or any day really), chef Alton Brown, famous from “Good Eats” has a recipe he claims is “much, much better” than any cookies you remember. Try them and see for yourself.
Of note today is also former President Barack Obama’s birthday. The 44th President will no longer be in the “50 something” bracket anymore as he celebrates the big 6-0. If you are looking for things to add to your summer reading list, he recently published a list of what he has been reading this summer.
Today is also another important birthday, that of the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard plays an important role in life in the northwest, from guarding and protecting our waterways to finding those lost at sea and helping rescue lost hikers. The Coast Guard traces its origins all the way back to 1790. To all the brave men and women of the Coast Guard, thank you for your service! Here is a recent example of the work our local Coast Guard performs.
