Scandinavian Festival celebrates 60 years
by Rebecca MacDonald
The Junction City Scandinavian Festival is pleased to announce the celebration of its 60th Festival, in person on Aug 12-15. When so many organizations have struggled to resume business as usual, the board members of the Scandinavian Festival Association (SFA) worked diligently to ensure the festival not only happens but is the best year possible.
2020 was difficult for many, and with heavy hearts SFA had to cancel the in-person festival that had been held annually since 1961. Still, to ensure the beloved festival could be celebrated in some way, the publicity committee produced over 40 YouTube videos, Facebook conversations and the annual Festival Magazine for 2020.
Happily, things are coming back to life, and the festival is no exception! The SFA Board of Directors has been working diligently to ensure there would be a Scandinavian Festival this year, with all the energy and excitement of the festivals so many remember fondly.
Most participating food and craft vendors of previous years will be in attendance, plus many new booths to browse, three stages packed morning to night with all your favorite local dancers, musical groups, diverse demonstrations and contests.
The Scandinavian Festival is unique in being one of the oldest local cultural festivals, and one of few free festivals offered — so, no admission or entertainment fees. Attendees can enjoy events and activities Thurs-Sat 10am-10pm, Sunday 9am-9pm. Do bring a little to spend on the delicious foods, including many traditional Scandinavian favorites like lefse, aebleskiver, frikadeller, and more. Many arts and crafts booths also offer something for everyone.
The folks at the festival say even if you don’t want to spend a cent, they still want you to join the fun. Pack a lunch, pick a spot by the stages, and enjoy all that the Scandinavian Festival has to offer. “We’re just excited that we can gather together again and want to celebrate our 60th Festival with as many of you as possible!”
